This viral Tiktok -Grindersandwich is filled with meat, cheeses and its signature creamed grinding salad. Served on an Italian bread with Calabric chili paste, tomato, onion and parmesan, it is a flavored occupation that never gets old.

A couple of years ago I came out with a sandwich series and it was very popular. I made everything from a fantastic BLT to New York’s famous chopped cheese, a tuna melt and of course this grind sandwich.
What is a sandwich
A hero in New England style, the grind can be hot or cold-min is hot. It is filled with meat, cheese and a crispy, tangy, creamy salad plus parmesan, tomato and extra onions.
Ingredients you need to make a grind sandwich

- Bread. I love a good hoagie loaf. I found mine at a local Italian deli.
- Selection of meat. I went with slices of salami, prosciutto and spicy pepperoni.
- Cheeses. I love Havarti and Colby Jack in this sandwich.
- Isberg Salad. This gives the salad a nice crunch.
- Pepperoncinis. They give this sandwich a big hit of spice without being super spicy.
- Calabrian Chili Pasta. Not a total requirement, but gives sandwich a great dimension!
For the rest of the ingredients, see the recipe index below!
Recipe tip
- Make this forward. You can collect sandwiches and store it in the refrigerator in advance. So just pop it in the oven when you’re ready to serve it. However, the salad will be pretty foggy if it sits too long. I say it’s best fresh.
- Can you make this without pork? Yes! Find salami made of beef. Skip the prosciutto and replace it with Turkey.
Recipe frequently asked questions
The origin of the Grinder Sandwich name is unclear-some say it refers to the required chewing material, while others associate it with Italian-American dock workers called “grinding machines.” Either way, it’s a delicious hefty sandwich.
Although recipes vary, any abrasive sandwich includes mixed meat, Italian cheese, creamy abrasive salad, tomato, onion and lots of parmesan. Mine adds Calabrian Chili pasta to a spicy kick.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Add red onion to a bowl, pour some cold water over it, and let it sit. This will remove some of the bitterness. Whisk mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, oregano, red pepper and garlic fat. Add salad, onion and pepperoncini and give it a taste. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
Cut the bread in half and add Calabrical Chili paste to both sides of the bread. Add the cheese to one of the half. Add the meat to the other half. Transfer to the oven to bake for about 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and the meat is heated. Add the salad on top of the meat along with a few slices of tomato, fresh onion and parmesan cheese.
Cut in half and enjoy. #grindersandwich
- You might be asking yourself if you can make this forward. And I say yes and no. You can collect sandwiches and store it in the refrigerator before the hand. So just pop it in the oven when you’re ready to serve it. However, the salad will be pretty foggy if it sits too long. I say it’s best fresh.
- Can you make this without pork? Yes! Find salami made of beef. Skip the prosciutto and replace it with Turkey.
- I love the grinding salad itself. And I actually made the salad of themselves, a piece of protein (like chicken) and served them together. Bliss! Does it take sandwich out of the equation together? Yes, but it’s still good.
