Most people choose a dog to add their family based on size, activity level, personality and race. While for others, it is either love at first sight or they are selected by a dog.
We hope that everyone leads to their local shelter when they are ready to adopt a pet, and according to Rover, the largest online network of pet sitters and dog walkers are many.
Rover released precisely the most popular dog breeds in 2025 based on their extensive database, with over 1 million dogs added over the past year.
Drum roll … the first place goes to mixed.

Rover shared, “with 49% of pet parents adopting from a shelter, it is not surprising that they (again) have taken the top place.”

The report also included a study by 1,000 US pet parents that revealed what traits they look for most. They found that pet owners consider size, but there is a quality they appreciate that all dogs are born with – loyalty.
They also shared, “Pet parents voted Pit Bull as most photogenic and most likely to be on social media. The Golden Retriever and the German shepherd entered second and third, while the French Bulldog and Pulls were identified as trending races on social media. “
